Use International First Aid Day To Have A Quick Focus On Your First Aid Readiness

International First Aid Day (celebrated this September 12th) serves as a vital reminder that workplace safety isn't a static policy—it is an active, everyday commitment. When an emergency strikes, quick thinking and proper preparation can save lives.

Whether you manage site safety or want to be better prepared to help a colleague, take a moment today to run through these essential checks.

Actions for First Aid Leads

If you oversee workplace health and safety, your proactive maintenance keeps the entire team secure:

  • Check First Aid Kits: Ensure kits are fully stocked, tailored to your specific workplace risk assessments, and contain items that are strictly within date.

  • Inspect Defibrillators: Confirm whether your AED needs a service and check that the defibrillator pads are still in date.

  • Prevent Skill Fade: Look at how your organisation manages skill fade between formal training refresher courses.

  • Maintain Accurate Records: Keep up-to-date logs of all staff training certifications as well as workplace incidents.

  • Boost Staff Awareness: Ensure all team members are aware of colleagues who may have additional medical or accessibility needs.

Everyone’s Everyday Responsibilities

First aid is everyone's business. Every employee should be confident in these core basics:

  • Calling for Help: Know how to call for emergency services and precisely direct ambulances to your specific workplace location.

  • Equipment Location: Make sure you know exactly where the nearest first aid kit and AED are stored.

  • Allergy & Auto-Injector Readiness: Know who in your team might require an auto-injector and ensure you know how to use one.

  • Choking & First Aid Recognition: Be able to recognise the signs of choking or general first aid incidents and feel empowered to take immediate, appropriate action.

Bonus Check: Don't Forget Fire Safety

While focusing on first aid, complete these 5 rapid fire safety checks:

  1. Escape Routes & Exits: Keep all escape routes completely clear of obstructions.

  2. Fire Doors: Verify doors close fully and are never wedged open.

  3. Equipment: Ensure extinguishers and gear have correct signage and pass visual checks.

  4. Alarms & Detectors: Conduct weekly tests and confirm all operational areas are covered.

  5. Training & Drills: Maintain regular fire drills and keep staff training up to date.
