More Than a Game: Supporting Athlete Mental Health as a Coach

a sports coach leading mental wellbeing by celebrating with their team

As a coach, you play a vital role in the lives of your athletes. You're not just teaching them skills; you're helping them grow into confident, resilient individuals. A crucial part of this is understanding and supporting their mental health, which is just as important as their physical performance.

At Oodles Training, we believe that great coaches are well-rounded coaches. While we provide the essential regulatory courses you need—like First Aid and Safeguarding—we also know that a truly effective coach is aware of the emotional well-being of their team.

This blog post takes key themes from our Mental Health courses and explores how you can positively impact your athletes' mental health and create a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Why Mental Health is a Coach Priority

For athletes, the pressure to perform, manage injuries, and balance commitments can be immense. These challenges can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, or self-doubt. As a coach, you're in a unique position to help.

By prioritising mental wellness, you can:

  • Boost Performance: Athletes with strong mental resilience are better equipped to handle pressure, stay focused, and bounce back from setbacks.

  • Build a Stronger Team: Creating an open and supportive environment encourages athletes to communicate, trust each other, and work together more effectively.

  • Improve Well-being: Your support can make a huge difference in an athlete's life, helping them develop coping strategies that will benefit them far beyond the sport.

The most effective coaches understand that supporting their athletes' mental health isn't an added extra—it's a core part of their role.

Practical Ways Coaches Can Support Their Team

There are many simple, effective things you can do to support your athletes:

  1. Encourage Open Conversations: Create an environment where athletes feel comfortable talking about their feelings. Start by checking in with them beyond just their performance. A simple "How's your week been?" can open the door to a more meaningful conversation.

  2. Focus on the Process, Not Just the Outcome: Help your team understand that effort, learning, and growth are just as important as winning. This reduces the pressure to be perfect and helps them build resilience in the face of defeat.

  3. Lead by Example: Show your own mental toughness by being calm under pressure and handling setbacks with grace. This demonstrates healthy coping mechanisms and provides a powerful role model for your team.

  4. Emphasise Team Unity: Foster a culture where teammates support each other. Encourage them to celebrate each other's successes and offer encouragement during tough times.

  5. Look for the Signs: Be aware of significant changes in an athlete's behaviour, such as a drop in performance, withdrawal from the team, or a change in mood. These could be signs they are struggling and may need extra support.
