What's the difference between a Fire Marshal and a Fire Warden training course?

Knowing Your Role: Fire Marshal vs. Fire Warden Training

Fire marshal and fire warden training. Is there a difference? Which is right for you?

Ensuring the safety of everyone in your workplace is paramount, and fire safety plays a crucial role in this. You've likely heard the terms "Fire Marshal" and "Fire Warden" used, and might be wondering if they're interchangeable and the short answer is that legally they are the same thing.

At Oodles Training we offer training for Fire Marshal and Fire Warden qualifications. The role of the Fire Warden or Fire Marshal include:

  • Fire Prevention: Helping to minimise fire risks in the workplace.

  • Emergency Response: Guiding people to safety during a fire evacuation and managing the emergency.

  • Compliance: Assisting the employer in fulfilling their fire safety duties as mandated by law.

  • Training: Receiving adequate training to perform their fire safety duties effectively.

While legally the roles are the same, a workplace might choose to differentiate them for internal management purposes, especially in larger or higher-risk environments. If this is the case typically the role split looks like this:

The Proactive Role (Fire Warden):

Day-to-day, proactive duties are assigned to a "fire warden," such as monitoring fire safety equipment, site walks, conducting spot checks, reviewing risk assessments and reporting potential risks.

The Reactive Role (Fire Marshal):

In this scenario, the "fire marshal" would focus more on reactive duties during an emergency, such as taking charge of the alarms, liaising with emergency services, leading evacuations, and coordinating post-evacuation checks.

Other staff training might be a very basic Fire Extinguisher training session looking at how extinguishers work and when to use them. This would be general training for all staff and separate to your specific Fire Marshal or Fire Warden trained staff.
