Can First Aid Kits Go Out of Date?

A first aid kit on a wall, with supplies that might be out of date

You've got a personal first aid kit tucked away in your car or at home, or a series of first aid kits positioned around your workplace or school. It's there for emergencies, ready to be deployed at a moment's notice. But have you ever stopped to think about whether the contents of your first aid kit can go out of date? The answer, is a resounding yes.

Just like the food in your cupboard, some of the items in your first aid kit have a shelf life. While some items might last longer than others, it's crucial to regularly check your kit and replace anything that's past its prime. Using out-of-date supplies could compromise their effectiveness and put someone's health at risk.

Why Do First Aid Supplies Expire?

Several factors contribute to the deterioration of first aid supplies:

  • Sterility: Sterile items, like bandages and dressings, can lose their sterility over time, especially if the packaging is damaged or compromised. Using non-sterile items increases the risk of infection.

  • Effectiveness: Some items can become less effective over time. They might not provide the intended relief or protection.

  • Physical Degradation: Adhesive bandages can lose their stickiness, making them less likely to stay in place. Scissors and other tools can rust or become blunt, especially if your first aid kit is stored somewhere with higher moisture levels or where you get big temperature fluctuations.

  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, or sunlight can accelerate the degradation of first aid supplies. Storing your kit in a cool, dry place is helpful to avoid this.

What Should You Do?

Regular checking of your first aid kit is vital. Here's a checklist to help you keep your kit in top condition:

  • Check expiry dates: Look for expiry dates on all items, especially eye wash, wipes, and sterile dressings. Discard anything that's expired.

  • Inspect packaging: Check for any signs of damage to packaging, such as tears, punctures, or water damage. Replace any compromised items.  We often talk about the ‘squeeze test’ for dressings on our courses!

  • Examine the contents: Look for any changes in the appearance or consistency of supplies. Discard anything that looks unusual.

  • Replace used items: Whenever you use something from your kit, replace it as soon as possible. Don't wait until the next check.

  • Keep a list: Make a list of the contents of your kit, including expiry dates. This will make it easier to check and restock.

  • Consider the environment: Think about where you store your kit. Avoid storing it in places where it's exposed to extreme temperatures or humidity, like a hot car or a damp bathroom.

How Often Should You Check?

We recommend checking your first aid kit at least every three months. However, if your kit is used frequently or stored in a challenging environment, you might need to check it more often.

Having a well-stocked and up-to-date first aid kit is essential for dealing with minor injuries and emergencies. Taking the time to regularly check your kit and replace expired or damaged items can make a real difference. In busy environments it is often helpful to assign someone this role, as it is easy for it to fall through the cracks, and everyone assumes it is someone else's responsibility.
